marenv::wake::LineSource Struct Reference

#include <WakeTypes.h>

Public Attributes

double pos [3]
 Centre of the line, m, NED; for a lumped source the centre of its rear face.

double flowDir [3]
 Unit direction of the relative flow at the source (along the wake), NED.

double axis [3]
 Direction of the body's long axis, NED; not necessarily normal to flowDir, but not parallel to it.

double length
 Length of the body along axis, m.

double width
 Width of the body across the flow and across its projected axis, m; the footprint normal to the flow is length times |axis x flowDir| times width.

double momentumDeficit
 M = drag / (0.5 rho |U|^2), m^2; the effective thrust coefficient is C_T,eff = M / (projected length times width).

Detailed Description

One slender wake source: a body much longer than it is wide, such as a rope, a floating collar or a cylinder (MENV-0044).

Where an ElementarySource casts an axisymmetric wake, a line source casts a plane wake: the Gaussian across the flow widens as sigma ~ x^(1/2) and the centreline deficit falls as x^(-1/2) at mid-span, the classical plane wake (Wygnanski et al. 1986; Pope 2000, ch. 5), and the wake ends smoothly beyond the ends of the body (LineDeficit()). All positions and directions are in world NED at the build time t0.
