sin(theta) cos(theta) L-hat = (U-hat . n) n - (U-hat . n)^2 U-hat.
L-hat is the lift direction of KF2012 Fig. 3 (p. 221), normalize((U-hat x n) x U-hat) with n flipped into the half-space of U (Eq. 20, p. 235); it satisfies Eq. 2 with the tangent of Eq. 21. Every lift harmonic sin(2k theta) carries the factor sin(theta) cos(theta), so the lift force is this vector times a polynomial in cos(theta). That form needs no epsilon in the tangent direction and no sign of U . n, and is smooth at theta = 0 and theta = pi/2, where L-hat itself is undefined or flips.
